Why use free weights and machines?

Barbells, cable stacks, and selectorized machines let you load a movement precisely and progress week to week — something bodyweight training eventually plateaus on. This generator pulls from compound lifts like squats and deadlifts as well as accessory machine work to round out a session.

What's in a generated gym workout

A gym session mixes big compound lifts — squats, deadlifts, presses, rows — with accessory machine and cable work so you're building a full session, not just chasing one lift. Round counts and rest periods scale with your Difficulty setting: Beginner uses two rounds with 45 seconds of rest between exercises so you have time to reset your setup between working sets, Intermediate steps up to three rounds with 30 seconds rest, and Advanced runs four rounds with only 20 seconds rest for a genuinely demanding session. Every rep target is rounded to a clean number in multiples of five once the movement calls for more than a handful, so you're never chasing an oddly specific count like 13 or 22 reps.

How to get the most from a gym session

  • Check the working sets and rest periods before you start so you're not hogging equipment during peak hours.
  • Warm up with the suggested bodyweight moves before adding load to the bar.
  • Ask staff for help with unfamiliar machines shown in your generated workout.
  • Start conservatively with load on any unfamiliar compound lift — the generator controls reps and rounds, but you control the weight on the bar.

Optional gear that helps

Training at home instead of a gym? These cover most of what the gym generator programs, in a small footprint.

  • Adjustable dumbbells

Replaces a whole rack of weights in a small space, so you can keep adding load as you get stronger.

Pick a range that fits your goals; a 5-25 lb pair covers most beginners.

  • Adjustable weight bench

Opens up presses, rows and step-ups, and doubles as a box for incline push-ups.

Look for a flat-to-incline bench with a weight rating well above your body weight plus load.

  • Lifting straps

Helps your grip keep up with your back on heavy rows, deadlifts and pull-downs.

Cotton or nylon loop straps are fine to start.

Gym workout FAQ

Do I need a full gym membership to use this?

You need access to free weights and/or machines for this generator's default exercise pool. If you're training at home instead, the home workout generator uses only bodyweight movements.

How do I know how much weight to use?

RepWheel sets reps and rounds, not load — that depends on your own strength level. A reasonable starting point on an unfamiliar lift is a weight you could comfortably do for 2-3 more reps than the target, then adjust up or down the following session.

Will this generator ever suggest the same exercise twice in one workout?

No — each generated workout draws unique exercises from the eligible pool for your chosen focus and equipment, so you won't see a movement repeated within a single session.

Can I use this for a full-body split at the gym?

Yes — set Muscle Focus to "Full Body" and Equipment to "Full Gym" to get a session that mixes upper, lower, and core movements using the available equipment.
