15-Minute Ab Workout You Can Do Anywhere (No Equipment)
A real core workout does more than crunches — here's a short one that covers all the bases.
Quick honest note first: visible abs come mostly from diet, not from how many crunches you do — you can't spot-reduce fat off your stomach. But a strong core is still worth training on its own merits: it stabilizes your spine, protects your lower back, and shows up in almost everything else you do physically.
What a good core workout actually needs
Most people only train one function of the core: flexion (crunching forward). A complete circuit covers four:
- Flexion — bending the spine forward against resistance (V-ups)
- Anti-extension — resisting your lower back from arching (planks, dead bugs)
- Anti-rotation — resisting your torso twisting (plank shoulder taps)
- Isometric holding — sustained tension under load (hollow body hold)
The 15-minute circuit
Do each move for the listed time or reps, rest 15 seconds between exercises, and complete the full circuit 3 times through (roughly 15 minutes including rests).
Form notes that matter more than reps
- Hollow body hold: Press your lower back into the floor the whole time. If it lifts off, bend your knees to make it easier — that's a sign the position is being held correctly, not a shortcut.
- Dead bug: Move slowly enough that your lower back never arches off the floor. Slower and controlled beats fast and sloppy every time.
- Plank shoulder taps: Keep your hips as still as possible — the whole point is resisting rotation, not creating it.
- V-ups: If a full V-up is too hard, bend your knees toward your chest instead of keeping legs straight. Same benefit, easier lever.
How to progress this circuit
Once three rounds feels manageable, add a fourth round, extend hold times by 10 seconds, or slow the tempo on the V-ups and dead bugs. Two or three sessions a week is plenty — the core recovers quickly, but it still needs recovery.
